Portable 6 mtr yagi?
Bruce Draper <bruceaa5b@...>
I’m looking for recommendations for a good portable 6-meter yagi. Good performer, 3 or 4 elements, preferably direct feed, easy to transport (comes apart in only 4 or 5 pieces — boom plus elements), assembles/disassembles easily (maybe even wing nuts!), not a heavyweight. I started sorting through the reviews on eHam.net but it wasn’t much help. Can you guys steer me to something?

The M^2 6M5 is my favorite (not the 6M5X). It’s 15 feet long but weighs only 11.5 lbs. all elements except the driven element can be folded against the boom for transport/storage. Wing nuts can be substituted for the hex nuts provided.
If you prefer something (a lot) smaller the PAR Moxon is a good choice. 3 dBi gain with surprising f/b ratio. Much better than a loop. Very easy set up/takedown.

Maybe one of the newer version M2 5 el might work. Take off the "far end" and maybe you'll have a 4 element. You'll need to look and see where the boom comes apart. The original 6M5 I have looses 2 elements when you do this and leaves you with a awkward stubby end hanging out. There were 1/2 dozen different 5 el's, so maybe one is better then another. Of course, maybe 3 el is still fine for your needs.
My M2 5 el uses saddles to mount the elements and breaks each elemsnt into two halves. It's very simple to loosen the two #6 (or #8 - can't recall) machine screws that fix the element halves onto the saddle and sweep each half inward, parallel to the boom. You then only need to deal with the driven element assembly, but I'm sure some method of compacting that could be thought out.
With the 5 el set up this way, I can completely assemble or 'tear down' the antenna in less then 10 minutes using a single screwdriver and two nut drivers.
Also, small 6M yagis with hairpin matches (more rugged then gamma matches) are dead simple to design and build - do it yourself and mechanically make it as you need it.
