W3DHJ/R CQ WW VHF DM77-78-87-88
The current prediction is for 102 degrees on Saturday.
Sunday's prediction isn't much better. Whewwwww!! I'll be doing DM88 - DM87 - DM77 - DM78, in that sequence on Sat. I may stay out late enough on Saturday to see the NEOWISE comet... :-) I'll be doing DM78 - DM77 - DM87 - DM88, in that sequence on Sun. If Saturday shows it to be just an FT4/FT8 Computer Contest, I will probably blow off any Sunday operations. Fw: [VHFcontesting] Anyone need EM87 on 6m or 2m?

Folks, After a little "prodding" from a local ham, I'm contemplating a portable operation from EM87 in the CQ VHF contest coming up. EM87 appears to be a much needed grid and It's been 35 years since I was there last, back when we first went to grid squares I was there for a 6m sprint as WD8ISK. I will have a kw on both bands and will operate SSB, CW and digital. Let me know if you are interested and please pass this on to your respective groups that I might not be a member of. Re: 2020 JAN VHF
Wonderful job again Duffey! Thanks for doing this as it brings great value to those who strive to do well in the contest. We are fortunate in NM to have you, along with Bruce and Scott authors of the awesome SS-SSB coverage, who put in a lot of time and effort on these contest summaries. While it's hard to believe, uninformed hams (they can't count pages apparently) think there is too much contest coverage in QST now! I think the additional coverage on the Web is appropriate and greatly appreciated. Reading that coverage should be part of everyone's contest preparation checklist. While not VHF and above, I hope to work many of you in the IARU HF Championship Contest this weekend. Re: 2020 JAN VHF
James Duffey
Thanks for the nice words Bruce. I think it hard to talk about the impact FT8 has had on the January VHF contest without some background, and that background grew into history. That picture of K1JT as a very young K2ITP was too good not to include.

Scott and Bruce’s write ups are excellent and contain a lot of data which is interesting to study and is helpful in planning one’s sweepstakes efforts. Highly recommended reading. I had thought about going into the discussion of encouraging different modes with different point structures, but there are a lot of layers to that discussion and I couldn’t really put forth a succinct discussion without a lot of caveats and equivocating, so yeah, a stand alone discussion for later. We could start one here. James Duffey KK6MC Cedar Crest NM

Nice job, Duffey. I especially liked the historical info. When you said "Having different QSO points for the higher bands has, in the long run, helped to get people on these bands," I thought for sure you'd follow it with something like "so maybe another change to the point structure could be used to encourage more activity on CW and phone." Saving that for another time? ;-)https://contests.arrl.org/ContestResults/2019/SS-Phone-2019-FinalFullResults.pdf 73,

Jay, thanks for the kind words. I have contemplated doing a subset of this article with the activity data for the Contest Update e-mail newsletter or National Contesting Journal. I think I would need to beef it up with data from the other contests though and that is going to take some more effort.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
When the results writeup was done in print, there was a page limit, which limited how much stuff could be in print and it is likely that at least most of the data related to the activity trends would have to have been left out and would end up on the web anyway. Anyway, I am looking into how the data can get a wider distribution. James Duffey KK6MC Cedar Crest NM

I know I sent you a direct message Duffey, but I too agree that this was an excellent write up. It is a travesty that this information is NOT included in the print version of QST. A wealth of information and a lot of great data showing positive activity trends and band/mode utilization. Great summaries like this NEED to be out in the public eye to generate more activity for all of us to benefit from. Well done my man. Coffee or drink of choice on me at Yuma 2021! I wanted to write a bit on how the use of FT8 has changed the contest, but I realized that I could not do that without writing about the history of the contest and how it has changed over the years. So, that was how that all came about. When I first started roving I spent a long time studying various VHF propagation modes, particularly with regards to contesting. That led me to Joe’s article on using scatter to make more contacts at greater distances in the VHF contests. That article, though quantitative, still contains information that is useful today. Anyway, looking at past contest results as part of that I found the picture of 16 year old Joe and how he and his brother really changed VHF contesting. I filed that away for future use and that time finally came. It all fits together nicely, puts WSJT into perspective, and I think most importantly, it shows that it is not a recent development, but is obviously a result of Joe’s early experience in contesting. With the quarantine at ARRL HQ, finding a copy of the picture suitable for the article turned out to be an effort for the editors. Again, thanks for the kind words. - Duffey James Duffey KK6MC Cedar Crest NM

Obviously if someone is there no, but if the frequency is open I'll call on 2m and 70cm calling frequency a few times... But I won't "camp" there, if I start getting a pile up ill have everyone follow me off frequency. 73 Ryan - N7OW

Re: FM simplex during VHF contests
James Duffey
John - In my experience FM QSOs around Albuquerque are kind of hit or miss, unless you can catch someone on simplex and break in on their QSO. I have had luck calling CQ on 146.52 and 146.58 (better luck), but this past contest I didn’t work anyone that way. In more than one contest, I have returned to the Albuquerque area a bit before the contest ended and called CQ on FM after I had picked up the few SSB stations I have not worked earlier. One year I worked about a dozen QSOs that way.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
One thing to do when asking stations of they have any other bands after they have said no, I ask not even FM and get a few QSOs that way. For example, stations with 6M only SSB/CW capability usually have 2M or 440 FM and they can often be persuaded to QSY to those bands for a few QSO points. Jim, KC7QY has also scared up some FM activity for me in Socorro from guys who did not have SSB/CW. I have had more success working FM by calling CQ on simplex in the Phoenix and El Paso regions. With two ops, one driving, it is possible to work FM in the bigger metropolitan areas while driving through. Still not a lot of QSOs though. If you do work FM stations at long distances, they are often weak and can be more easily copied with the squelch off. The ARRL kind of killed off FM contesting, at least away from the populous areas, when, for a long time, they prohibited QSOs on 146.52, the national calling frequency. They are trying to bring it back with the SOFM category. Sorry this is a bit late, but I hope it helps. - Duffey KK6MC James Duffey KK6MC Cedar Crest NM

I would say “AA5PR CQ simplex” and then say your location, not your gridsquare. You’ll have a chance to explain the exchange once someone calls. Some folks are put off by contesters and will not answer. Sometimes helps if you slow down to ragchew pace. GL Bill W7QQ
