Jim, I read about this in one of the various NASA/SAE pubs I get. The brief goes into more detail, but, basically, there is (or was) a project running at AFRL NM that uses a novel method of real-time sporadic E detection involving broadband noise from the national power grid. It appears they have (or had..) a pretty extensive detector network down there somewhere and, when reading between the lines of the brief, it appears someone involved probably has a amateur license. 432 amplifier for sale

I have a 432 cavity amplifier that is ready to go. It's tuned, proven and has QSOs on it. It's a single Eimac 8874 in a Varian cavity and will do 475W out with about 20W of drive. This is a linear amp, not Class C FM. The catch is it does not have a high voltage (or filament) supply. I used the supply from an old HF amplifier which ran two of the same tubes and simply hard wired the HV, filament, bias and control to the cavity amp. Any power supply running in the 2000-2500V range and capable of, say, 500 mA would do fine. No T/R relay is included, but a super low loss LP filter is. I have a spare cavity that could be included to sweeten the deal. It's a 'project' for sure, but an inexpensive way to generate decent smash on 432. The whole thing could be yours for $300. I have extra 8874's also, which are a negotiable part of the deal. I guess it's shippable, but I'd rather not. -W9RM Keith Morehouse via MotoG

The main thing FSK441 has going for it is SINGLE TONE. Various literature can point to some advantages and some disadvantages of each mode (MSK144 v FSK441), mostly focusing on 2-3 dB more or less sensitivity, which, IMO, is not near as important with meteor scatter as it might be with very weak constant signal terrestrial or EME work. The bottom line, as I see it, is the ability to detect, aurally and visually, the tiny, tiny single tone artifacts in the waterfall display (and between your ears) when using FSK441. It's been proven by countless contacts that this ability increases completion rates. It's been suggested that a single tone isn't valid because "the operator doesn't know WHO sent that tone". When I set up a 222 sked on a specific frequency (not on a "calling" frequency), using a long boom yagi(s) with sharp pattern, pointed at my partner station, running a specific sequence and using gear on both ends with better then average frequency accuracy and stability (most successful ops on 222 have accurate means of being "on frequency" and WSJT modes, even the old ones, give you a relatively good method of detecting how accurately you're netted to the other station) I suspect I have a chance, very close to 100%, of knowing EXACTLY who I'm hearing. It's also been suggested that FSK441 single-tone isn't valid because no information is passed. I consider that to be a pretty weak argument since a multitude of operators used FSK441 daily for over a decade to make probably 10's of thousands of contacts on 6M and above and nobody has yet come forth to try and "cancel" those contacts. Contacts can not be made invalid just because technology changes. Furthermore, the 4-tone aspect of FSK441 single-tone DOES pass along "decodable" data, with individual messages (R26, RRR, 73, ect) corresponding to individual tones (frequencies) that are easily recognized when stations are closely netted in frequency. Ask and you shall receive. The attachment is a spot search on W5UHF from DX Summit, using a start date of 1995. You'll note the last entry is 2009 and probably the previous owner, who I didn't know. There is another page, but this page answers my question. With the rise of Skimmers for CW spots and PSKReporter for WSJT spots, both feeding into aggregators like DX Summit, I find it VERY unlikely W5UHF has been used for any period of time on either of those modes. I totally agree and expect that I would be notified if anyone was going to use the call. I don’t believe it was a valid contact but wanted to try to make sure that no one was using our club call on 160m. I’m going to return the card. I just looked at QRZ and see that there have been 881 lookups. Seems a bit large for a call that's only been used in V/UHF contests. Might be a pirate out there. You might consider putting a note on QRZ the the call is generally only used on VHF/UHF. Either way, I agree, send the card back as NIL and operation not authorized. Jim KC7QY
