Friday 1200 June 14 VHF Lunch Garcia’s Juan Tabo

Let’s have an informal VHF lunch this 1200 Friday, June 14 at Garcia’s 3601 Juan Tabo. Let me know if you think you will come so I can give them a head count if there will be a large or semi large group. - Duffey

W9RM JUNE VHF

Keith Morehouse

After a pathetic start to the contest (no 6M openings and a myriad of self-inflicted computer problems), the contest turned itself around on Sunday and provided a couple of decent 6M runs.  When I went to sleep Saturday at midnight, I had a total of FIFTY contacts and a lot of thoughts about exactly WHY I was doing this and had worked hard all week with the new antenna system.

The 6M openings were OK, but not excellent and too few, and the jury is STILL out on whether FT8's opioid grip on vast tracts of hamdom has hurt our capability for running rate.  I still suspect it has, but it's hard to prove unless we see a nice, extended opening.  I had a couple of 80/hr full hours, which is nothing, and there were A LOT of signals on 313, which I was watching on the SDR waterfall screen, even when the band was producing 40-over openings on SSB.  I made it a point of (foolish ??) pride to get OFF digital when SSB could be run at any rate.  There is just NO rate to be had on FT8 - too much weirdness and sketchy operating technique.

Anyway, the 2019 June contest was better then the last several years, but didn't produce anywhere near the conditions needed to run up a good score against the "east".  Special thanks to KK6MC for a rover run out in my direction on Sunday that produced a bunch of usually un-worked mults.  Running 6M with Duffy showed the new, higher 6M antenna really opens up close-in possibilities  Unfortunately, I STILL was unable to work MY OWN grid on any band.  I really need to get the XYL a license...

KK6MC/r in VHF Contest

James Duffey

I have just returned from a 7 week/7000 mile road trip, so the last thing I feel like doing is spending more time sitting in a car, but, what the heck?

I will set up the rover in the morning, so not sure if I will get to start on time or not. I should be able to if things go well.

On Saturday I will start off easy, going over to the Moriarty convergence DM64/DM65/DM74/DM75 .

1800Z DM64

2000Z DM74

2200Z DM75

0000Z DM65

This schedule is flexible and depending on activity I may stay longer or shorter at each stop. If 6M is open , it is likely I will stay longer.

On Sunday, if I still feel up to it, I will attempt to hit grids west of Albuquerque.

Here goes:

1400Z DM54xq leave 1430

1600Z DM64cx leave 1730

1830Z DM55xh leave 1900

2030Z DM56va leave 2100

2230Z DM66am leave 0000z

If I get back to DM65 before the contest ends, I will operate from near Abuquerque.

As this itinerary requires longer travel, it is likely that I will get off schedule here.

Due to the short time I have for setup, I will only have 6M, 2M, 222MHz, and 432MHz. SSB and CW.

I will be on APRS when I have coverage, look for KK6MC-6 on APRS.fi

You can also text (preferred) or call 505 228 5491.

This will be a low key contest for me. Listen for the weak ones. - Duffey KK6MC

Jay, I was sporadically sending calls during the 1st 30 sec period for about 20 minutes.
I could hear plenty of pings from WA7XX but I'm only running 600W

From past experience, I can fill out the log for my 2 meter QSO's right now:

- The 3 guys in El Paso (K5LA, K5PHF, ...)
- WB2FKO
- W7QQ
- Maybe N1AV
- AA7A, if he is on
- WA7JTM, if he goes to DM53 or DM54
- K5AM (W5SIX) if he is on from his mountain QTH

WA0QJE would be on the list, but I would be borrowing his 2 meter radio.
NM5SD is an SK.

None of the rovers will be in range. Guys running <=100 watts to small beams living in (Phoenix, Tucson, Albuquerque) valleys just aren't workable from here.

Life is tough on VHF in DM52XT, even on a hilltop :)

It appears all is a go on the bottom 4 bands this weekend.  Hope to hear a few NMVHF guys, more hopefully, above 6M.  I will try to leave one radio on 144.200 and keep one eye on the SDR display while working 6M.  Call CQ or something on 2M if you can't find me on 6.

I hope this doesn't turn out to be a FT8 contest.  I will attempt to work my share if the band isn't open well, but I refuse to sit on 50.313 during a good Es opening, limping along at 40/hr.  If the band opens and there's nobody to run on SSB, I'm done with it.

Equipment as follows... good luck all.

50.  KW, 7el @ 40', 7el at 65', 5el @ 30'
144.  600W, 2M5WL @ 50'
222.  400W, 5WL @ 70'
432.  KW, 9WL @ 75'
